Cardinal George has examined the public record to identify Chicago priests who have been accused of sexually abusing minors. Our list of 85 priests is considerably longer than the list of 55 priests that Cardinal George (photo at left) released recently. We also provide extensive information on many priests, including full assignment records and links to additional information. We will be supplementing that information in the coming weeks and searching for other accused Chicago priests. Please email us with suggestions and corrections to this work in progress.

Additional priests alleged to have sexually abused children:

Richard James Kurtz Father Richard James Kurtz is a Jesuit priest, who was arrested in Chicago by the FBI on charges of sexually assaulting a boy in 2001, while Kurtz was in Colorado. At the time of the sexual assault, Kurtz was a chemistry teacher at the University of Detroit High School in Detroit.

The sexual assault was first reported in 2001 and according to a written statement by The Society of Jesus-Chicago Detroit Province, it reported the allegations to authorities in Michigan when the report first surfaced. The Province claims to have been working with Civil Authorities in Colorado since April, 2011.

Kurtz was removed from public ministry soon after the Province received the initial allegation and, according to the Jesuits, his activities have been restricted since then. However, Kurtz’s facebook account says that he has been employed at Colombiere Retreat Center in Clarkston, Michigan from October 2008 to October 2011. The Columbiere Retreat Center offers overnight accommodations and meeting facilities for a variety of corporate and school groups including youth retreats and choir and band retreats. Somehow, despite “restrictions” on his ministry, Kurtz had access to children until this October.

60 Percent of Chicago's Parishes Had Pedophile Priests: Study

Tuesday, Oct 12, 2010

Nearly 60 percent of Chicago's Roman Catholic parishes have had a priest publicly accused of sexually abusing a child, according to a report released by three advocacy groups.

The report, released Monday by Voice of the Faithful, African American Advocates for Victims of Clergy and Sexual Abuse, and the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests (SNAP), revealed that that 97 priests have been publicly accused of sexual abuse in Chicago from 1917 to 2009.

The list of names contained on this page does not state or imply that individuals facing allegations are guilty of a crime or liable for civil claims. The list merely contains allegations. The U.S. legal system presumes that a person accused of or charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty. Similarly, individuals who may be defendants in civil actions are presumed not to be liable for such claims unless a plaintiff proves otherwise. Admissions of guilt or liability are not typically a part of civil or private settlements.

Note: The Huffington Post has a document purported to be the raw data from the Voices of the Faithful study (.xls). It's said to include the names of priests and information on where and when they were employed by the Archdiocese.
